It depends on what you are comfortable with. I have a lot of trouble with cash games, but tend to go pretty deep in tournaments. Bankroll management is key. That's my main problem.

smaller tourneys and sit and go's seem to give you better odds then big tourneys

Poker is pretty comparable to the gold rush in Yukon. Very few people make money and there are a lot of broken dreams. However, people providing (in this case poker sites, casinos, sites like this one, people providing equipment and books) make a good living out of it.
So, the best way to make money in poker is to provide for poker players.
