Can somebody please explain this term as it relates to poker from a beginners perspective. I hear the term used quite often but I am confused. Thank You!

Variance is just the fancy word for luck.

The term is in reference to the law of large numbers and statistical probabilities. The idea is an explanation for running good and running bad while using the same strategy. The idea is that you shouldn't use short term results to analyze your play. Just because you got lucky and hit that flush doesn't mean you should chase it every time....

Basically what they said it's also a way of fooling yourself when your a bad poker player.

variance- 1.change in something: a change that occurs in something
2.difference between things: a difference between two or more things
3.disagreement: a difference of opinion or attitude

variance refers to things such as bad beats, coolers, etc. where you have the statistical edge and you get beat anyway
