The term is in reference to the law of large numbers and statistical probabilities. The idea is an explanation for running good and running bad while using the same strategy. The idea is that you shouldn't use short term results to analyze your play. Just because you got lucky and hit that flush doesn't mean you should chase it every time....

variance refers to things such as bad beats, coolers, etc. where you have the statistical edge and you get beat anyway
