You can't really protect the people from their selves in a free society. Irresponsible people will find ways to end up in poverty w/o needing gambling as the vice to avoid. Haven't we had enough of government protecting us against ourselves for our own good a.k.a. nanny state?
Until poker sites can guarantee that no US citizens that play there can dodge paying taxes on their winnings those sites will not be allowed to accept US players.
The govt. could care less about Joe six pack going broke. It's all about the money they might be missing out on.

Which is exactly why they took down the biggest "poker only" sites. And left 100s of "poker and casino" and "casino only" sites. There's no money in protecting the citizens. There was money in attacking the large companies. Rest assure the sites that where most concerened with encryption, safe banking and accounts, good software, and fighting hacking (to protect it's players which are its income) where the ones the US gov't took down.

That's not proof of why online poker is banned. Naming some people that ruined their lives due to online gambling(I assume that's what those names stand for) doesn't prove why the government bans online poker. If that was the case they would ban alcohol, casinos, prescription drugs, and basically anything that can ruin a persons lives if that person chooses to abuse them.

Wagon, you are so right! Scratch tickets in MA give you 1:5 odds of winning (1:4 with $10+ tickets). Even the most terrible poker player ever is going to lose money slower than that. I worked at a big time gambling convenience store for 3 years in high school. We offered Keno as well as lottery and scratch tickets. People throw stupid amounts of money into state lottery and the addiction can get out of control real fast with 24 hour merchants at every corner. Couple of trash collectors came in every friday night spending nearly $500 on scratch tickets in 2 hours - OUCH!

By the way, Mass has the highest payout for their lottery and the most gambling addicts nationwide
