The Oxford English Dictionary and Cassell's Dictionary of Slang suggest that it comes from the Mexican Spanish 'potiguaya', meaning marijuana leaves.

I never like using the name MARIJUANA,it,s just a hispanic slang for CANNABIS.Plus people that still have problems with cannabis usually associate marijuana with negative feelings...
