Sorry but there might be a couple anti-virus's that slow your system down, but the majority are light on resources. My norton anti-virus takes up about 2 percent of my cpu when its running at 50 or 60 percent. In this day and age an antivirus is mandatory. Heck I thought everyone knew that. A simple light free edition of AVAST will do the guy a great job and his system won't be slowed down.

Or simply google "top ten anti-virus's" and there are sites that rate them and tell about them. I go to technojourney.com. A guy works out promotional deals with software companies to give him so many copies of licensed software and he always has great anti-virus's with 3,6, or a year trial for free. I'm on Norton 2014 Anti-virus for free for 6 months thanks to that site. If your on facebook you can pick from about 6 different ant-virus's for free. Just type in anti-virus or av security or av marketplace. I forgot which one and they will hook you up. You need to get one ASAP before you catch an infection and have a good chance of your computer screwing up. If you don't like the free paid versions you can get at the two places I named, Bitdefender has ranked #1 all over the world.

One of the best ones Ive found is Malwarebytes. It is frickin awesome. Another good one is Bullguard, main reason being it has a 3month trial, and of course Norton.
