I'm very tired right now, so my math could be wrong...but he had pot odds to call there. Mathematically speaking you did the correct thing by investing ahead, and he did the correct thing by calling with the odds he was getting for his draw.

I think he was definately getting pot odds after the flop to call, with 12 outs, it was basically a flip there and he was getting 2-1 on a call, but after turn he was only a little better than 25%, and again the pot sized bet gave him only 2-1, so that was a bad call on his part , unless i'm reading this wrong.

This just my honest assement the c bet and he call the turn should have been a check to him base off the 3hearts on the brd and he call your initial raise..he could easy have 2 hearts, but at least 1 which is A OR K.. depending on his river bet you make a choice to let it go or call..all depending on this player and watching the table..on to the next game and yep merge sucks.
