one other thing would be to cut out passwords entirely ... go to the opt in 24 hours in advance and be added to the tourney list that way without registering.

Won't work.. People sit in forums and wait for the correct one.

Figure if i put it at 30 seconds they wont have time to see it, register themselves, post it in the forums, users refresh and see it, then register

From what I understand there hasn't been more than 10 people entered in than expected, and to me that seems like more of a personal leak than a forum post. I don't know if people have seen the pw's posted on forums, but my guess is that one or two opt-ins give the pass to a couple of their friends. Luckily we haven't suffered any mass leaks with hundreds of people. If I'm right though, it'll definitely be tough to totally quell the leaking if were dealing with a group of people who are on the ball.

I like that idea too, but the only problem is that people don't always know if they'll be around 24 hours in advance (definitely me) so switching solely to that system might be a little oppressive. I think the best idea would be a mix of the different options so we can appeal to everyone: last minute charlies, people who want a smaller field, people who want more security, etc... The main goal is obviously to at least break even financially, so you have to take Zab's point of view into account - he need's people to opt in.

When we do restricted tourneys, the # of new users that come to the site is down by 60-70%. That's not great for getting more users, more freerolls (it scares them away)

HOWEVER, we are getting more restricted freerolls. (Once a week now!)

Exactly my point, it would be tough to do away with the normal password protected ones.

worked fine for me last night although you have to be very very quick no margin for error
