Small pocket pairs

Yesterday in the full tilt pokerowned private tourny, i was dealt pocket 4's at the time table chip leader but admittedly not by much.

I was big blind, the dude under the gun was short stacked but pushes all in, it folds round to 1 off the button and only 300 chips behind me also declare all-in, the button also takes the chips and goes all-in.

weve got 3 people all-in, the small blind folds and down to me to act, I went to fold... then paused.... if 3 people are going all-in with a slightly loose game being played im guess theyve got premium cards or all with aces and going for broke. With that in mind 3 aces have been dealt making my 4's look quite juicy but then any kicker card to come would throw me out.

I folded with the three players confirming my thoughts A-8 UTG, A-K 1 off the button and A-Q on the button

None of them made a hit and A-K takes his total to just over 6K, obvisously hind sight i know i would of won........ but with my thoughts of them all having aces would it of been right to call with a small pair like 4's and going for broke? or did i play it correctly?

i had a similar hand recently. playing very well in a tournament, got dealt pocket 7s. ended up going all in after a flop of 2 4 6. Lost to A Q after a queen comes on the turn. I think now my opinion is if youre playing good in the tournament, don't get involved in those small pocket pairs.

i always love playing pocket pairs by limping in and seeing cheap flops so that if you hit a set it is very well disguised =]

playing small pairs are great if you know it's just you an another person,,, or if on the button and the cost to see the flop gets the right odds with multi players,,,go for it...

It depends on the positions for me.

i agree with linds, it definitely depends on the position. you cant play a low pocket pair from early position

I agree small pairs are good if there cheap or a last resort

Usually these are very risky but if you catch another one on the flop then you are usually good to go but if not its best to just fold

Yeah, I agree. I still hate missin' on the flop though, at least you're not expecting too much like with JJ (which always gets cracked haha)

I ran a simulator, again obvisiously now i know what the cards were id of proberly gone all-in as well..... trust your instincts ojwood... trust your instincts lol

i sling and 8 and a 2 and on the flop 8 2 2 come out the turn brings... another 2! .... dang..

It is quite likely that some of your opponents have Ax and even may have some of each others outs but you also have to put pocket pairs within their range as well. If one of your opponents shows up with a bigger pocket pair then you are essentially drawing to a two outer. In this situation you would have won but I do not like to risk a significant portion of my chips with a hand that can quite easily be dominated in this situation.

I agree with you , with small pairs you should always limp . Remember you can hit your 3 of a kind 1 in 9 times

even if you dont flop a set,you can have the best hand a lot of the time,it shouldnt be like if i dont flop a set i'll fold.its hard to hit hands you cant fold evey flop you miss.

44 is almost never good in that spot. Fold it was a smart choice. At best you're a weak favorite in a coinflip. You can't be hindsight results oriented and play profitable poker.

It´s Depends how many stack do you have, and your position in the table... Sorry about my english, i´m from brazil!!

Good fold man, i wouldnt play 44 against 2 other people.. especially for all my chips..

damn thats a punch in the gut hahah.. i hate when i fold the shit and it hits so hard.. but then again there are those times at least for me where im not focused and i fold the goods only to see i woulda got sucked out on.. keep playing good poker fold the shit in the end you will come out on top.

If in a hand like that, Id be happy to put my money in with 44 if roughly 10 percent of your stack is in jeapordy, because that situation played many times over you still lose. You are racing too many kickers. That being said pocket fours a worthwhile set mine if there are at least 20 BB or more in your opponents stack. That makes the implied odds worthwhile for all the times you miss the flop and have to fold.

sometimes you go to leave the dead bones as we bend,, and then in an advanced part of the tournament,,,, we will need those chips,,,, so is the poker friends,,,,, as people say the fallen drop you

if im sitting on 50k and there is only 5k worth of chips all in against me its worthwhile, because you are still playing on a strategy of minimal risk. That and once you reach the mid to late stages of a tournament knocking people out is more valuable. If you sit on 1500 and i sit on 1500 and some dude pushes all in for 300 i fold quick. if im in late position or even button and four people limp, and the table is playing the right way ( not much aggression) then the implied odds of calling is worthwhile. On average you will miss the flop 7 times and have to fold then that one time you hit you get paid off by the likelyhood of one of the many people seeing the flop connected in some way and will stay for some bets.

I think its depend on position, usual i call.

thanks everyone for the replys. ive purposely got short stacked a few times recently in an experiment and have tried your ways of playing to see which one pans out best for me. ive come to a new and also improved way of playing the short stack thanks to everyones info and look foward to implimenting it in my future games. thank you again everyone!!

i agree it definitely depends on the position.

I think you made a very good fold 44 vs 3 players with 5 cards to go.
JJ-22 i usually just limp in or re-raise if i got position.

i hate those things ! whenever i got all-in with pocket rockets, i got screwed by guy with small pair who hit set at river... and when i bluff with small pair, set never comes :-/

you made the right decision in my opinion. you never know what may have happened if you had called. the "Random Number Generator" isn't always so random..
