is poker really about knowing the math or would u guys say it is much more more about luck
knowing your numbers in math is the way to go so u can apply it towards the tables
i in imo of course
most people will come to this thread saying "i think its 60% math, 40% luck", "i think its 30% luck, 70% math" or "i think its 80% skill, 20% luck" or "for me it looks more like 50% luck, 50% skill"...well........whatever.........i use to think this way: once you TOTALLY depend on cards you get and also you CANT control the cards you will be dealt..for me it looks more like 100% luck......:)
frankly I don't think math is involved in online poker, except winning or losing
Seeing how you said poker I am going to take tat as both live and online. If you ever want to play at a high level, math does come into play.
If it's a freeroll, I'd say luck early on, math skill in the later stages. If it's a big buy in tournament, people will play better with a deeper stack.
anyone who has played poker long enough would say it's a matter of luck. and of course strategy is very important. you must know how to play with each deal. a bluff can sometimes win.
Take a look at a straight flush draw with 15 outs.
Bluffs have to do with timing and board texture.
Knowing both the pot odds and how the players are if tight or aggressive and how they play certain hands.
There are several things you have to take into account when calling, your stack size and implied odds are among the important ones.
If you dont know anything about odds and just play with your instincts, you wont be a great player especially online. Its way more important online than live because you dont have a lot of tells to work with. Math more important than luck although luck is what you really want.
wow this is unnecessary we are all in this together
If you read a book or article from winning players that really know the math of poker and they explain mathematically what influenced their decision you will probably be amazed. To them it isn't just outs and pot odds. They are getting an idea on the range of hands the opponent plays, the percentage chance they believe the opponent is bluffing, the percentage chance that they are ahead and then the percentage chance the opponent will lay down to their raise. Then they are computing the optimal amount of money that will induce that lay down. They are adding up the chance the opponent folds to a raise to the value of their hand vs opponents range to see if they are getting positive EV. They are also mathematically figuring out what they believe will be the best way to get value out of that hand.
As a lifelong TAG player bordering on nit, when I read Gus's book it blew my mind away. When I saw all the math behind his madness it opened my eyes. It also showed me how much I suck at poker.
Yes, If you count the number of outs you have.
Math is important.
you have to know your odds.
But sometimes you need some luck.
If you play very tight you can become a BadBeat against.
or the bad luck takes a part.
All the above sounds correct to me !
i think in poker 30% skill, strategy, math and 70% luck... you can count outs, but if you have luck than that card wht you need come...
If you are just talking about a tournament that you are playing, the result will be mostly luck. If you're talking about the long run, say in a year, then luck has very little to do with it and skill plays a larger role.
dude... I play in pokerstars and not the biggest tournoments... there allways are some noob, who call pre-flop with bad cards and win pot....

i have 53% win if he have AK after flop... i be agresive in pre-flop. raise in flop and on turn... just... sometimes thats not skill... it's luck...
he said later his cards...
wish usa could play poker stars i miss stars the most
have any of you read poker math that matters by owen gains?
Poker is the most simple/Complicated game ever invented. Hints the reason people get so intrigued by playing it. For those that say math has not place in poker you are completely wrong. Math should be the basis of the decision you make. Pot odds/ set mining all of the above. If you are on a draw it helps to use pot odds, implied odds, reverse implied odds. If you pick up any poker book worth reading it references math the entire time for decision making purposes.
To the guy saying its a free roll tournament you don't need math. At what point do you stop playing small pp. You have a 15 percent chance of hitting a set. Which should only be in the very beggining of tournament. Playing them trying to hit a set later on is wrong every time. As far as luck goes. I would say luck is the short term win or loss giving the percentage(math) that was suppose to happen or not happen. Often referred to as varience. Google any terms. STUDY THE MATH. (rant complete)
15% is high suk
it's a little over 8 to 1 so the math on that is 1/8.1 = 12.34% approx
Theres alot involved..math, reading ability, patience, luck...but one saying is definately true...its better to be lucky than good!
so many variables come into play. its all about making the right desicion.
I have always heard optimum is .75 skill and .25 luck
gl
luck is always a factor in games of chance. what makes someone better though is having the knowledge (math/psychology/strategy) needed to constantly make better decisions than their opponents.
you need all , skills math and a lot of luck :D not easy a tournament long
Skill, Math and a lot of luck sounds about right to me!! Lol
it is the luck of the cards you get with the skill/math of knowing when and how much to bet. How much to bet is the math part, when is the skill part
Knowing the potential outs and win odds that you have is crucial towards playing
I could not agree more. Post flop play especially can take a lifetime to master
MATH is king. It builds roads, and most everything else. Poker is an exception in SOME cases. there is no BLUFF in mathematics.. HIGH stakes , math is good.
math is a good tool when playing poker...................
