Learning to use All-In as an Effective Strategy

These are just some of the responses you will get after reading this post and using the knowledge I am about to give you.:cool:

Simple Stuff - When you shove all-in preflop, you guarantee yourself to see all 5 cards, no getting bluffed, slow-played or outplayed.


-When you shove all-in pre-flop, you often isolate the number of opponents you have to beat to 1 or 2. So if you have A-A you don't have to worry about wasting them on a multi-way flop.:confused:

-When you shove in pre-flop later in the tournament, you can often just pick up those vital blinds and antes.:)

-At the final table, shove all-in in your LB if you have a decent stack. Just do it-no matter what your cards. You show aggression and may tilt your BB next to you.

- Obviously when you shove in pre-flop you are maximizing your chances of a big pot win or knocking out other players.

- If you feel that there are other players that are better than you at the table, you completely neutralize their ability to out-play you before and after the flop. In other words, you make the cards play for themselves.


Other Tips and Etc. . . Determine a hand range in relation with position and stack sizes that you feel comfortable shoving all in with.

- If you're going to play a gambling game like poker, why not maximize your chances by seeing all 5 cards?

Not much more I can add on to this. Basically all-in can become an effective strategy for any new player, it might anger your fellow patrons, but that's a sacrifice we all have to make.:D

Well it is an effective strategy if you are not confident in your ability to outplay your opponent. In general, it's a dumb move because you are getting worse hands to fold and the only hands that are calling you have you dominated. -EV play. There's a reason you never see pros open shove unless they're short stacked in a tourney

all in pre everytime you have a good starter is a good way of reinforcing the fact that you are a donk and dont have the skill to play post flop poker. On merge tho you can win with any 2 no matter how terribly you play them.

I play to win, you get your money in when you have the best of it and fold when you dont. Timing is everything , try and win a big pot every couple of levels you dont need to risk your stack with an all in untill late in the tourney when the bigstacks start to bully you. All in is not a strategy, it as an excuse for players that dont have the patience to grind it out.

I am not advocating all in every time people. However, remember the +Ev is largely nullified because of the fact that When you're broke, you're out, this is highlighted in David Sklansky's book, " Advanced Tournament Strategy "

All in is a very effective tool later in tournaments. It is to be used against short stacks that have 30% or less of your stack. Not against opponents that have more than you or its a half a chance you could be out. If only used against short stacks 30% or less you can afford to lose the occasional flip , while also using pressure to get people to fold.

I try and get all my chips in with the best hand,,,,preflop or whenever,,,,,When you allow someone to limp in with 7-2 suited and they hit a set,,,where does your big pair stand now, even when you make a good size raise preflop, some idiot with any two cards will call,, ,,,,if someone is going to suck out on me (which does happen) they are going to have to risk their chips to do it.... just my thoughts,,,

But this is one reason why I like pushing with a monster early game. People think you are weak and call with weaker. AA or KK only though. And only if there are a decent amount of loose aggressive players at the table.

i never straight push pre unless the pot has been atleast 3 bet and i have a monster pair or in some cases AK depending on the circumstances... just the way i play

I read this three times. I feel like these are tips based on observations from a player who is seeing donks just get lucky at the tables, which is a horrible thing to do towards fellow forum members who are learning the game. Yes, donks get lucky, but luck isn't a strategy. Also, pushing any two against the BB is stupid stupid stupid. You are at the final table already. You're willing to risk first place by giving a decent chunk of your stack to the BB when he calls with Ace rag against whatever the hell you're stealing with. Instead of an opponent that's about to go home and guarantee you a little more money, you just built up another competitor.

Playing bingo doesn't maximize your chance at anything besides bingo.

All in preflop is not an effective strategy even when you have pocket aces. Yes you get the blinds but no action for you.

Actually, you'd be surprised on the action I can get, but I gotta read my table right. When I do, I usually get pretty decent action.

I was just saying because I usually only pick up the blinds.

I play to win also. I don't go all in unless I have best hand possible.

Interesting post and well thought out at least. There are some points here, and OP is correct in saying this play might be used to a weak player's advantage. The problem with this is that the weak player will never get better, will never learn how to play post flop, and will eventually get figured out.

Also want to mention that it is NOT -EV, it is simply less +EV than playing a normal hand. You won't lose money going All in with Aces pre-flop even on open shoves, but you won't win as much as you could have.

If a player pushes me off the river and turn, than he deserves to get the pot...

All-in-all, my ideal game is pot-limit.

I like to use all in when I know I have best hand and when I know I will get a call.

All in strategy never seems to work for me anyway.

Me neither AryAlton! Besides....I figure when I do have a great hand, it's easier to get $500 from a few people than to get one person to call my all-in!! Just my two cents worth. :)

With my luck,,, people suck out almost everytime post flop....it really seems that way...

last tourney - i had AK in the sb first hand - all in and call in front. I folded. I woulda lost - ended up coming in 2nd instead.

While I do agree that the all-in can be used as a strategy, I think it should be used sparingly and only in certain situations.

This is my 2 cents, early in a MTT you get dealt A-A and you have 4 callers in front of shoving all in what are you going to do? Hmmmmmmmmmm well I am sure most here are going to reply insta call! No Brainer right?

Ok let's look at this scenario you are sitting at the Main Event at the WSOP and you put up the 10K buy in. What would you do with the same scenario as you see on line?

Good players already realize that they are playing in a tournament that is going to take up at least 4-5 hours of their time. As for WSOP days and months. So are you READY to risk your tournament life right away to chip up quick/and or go out early? Just a thought because I can tell you and some of you here have seen me fold A-A early because I am thinking long term.

One of these days I am going to play a tournament from start to finish by just going all in when I want to play a hand. I've just never had the guts to try it.

:cool:how bout blind playing.sometimes I'll play with a peice of paper taped to my computerscreen so I can't see my cards..and just play postion and bet sizes (%).. hmmmm j/k but this I will try one day to @steve..hehe only thing is I'D have to look when they pushed. :cool:

i agree with shoving in serveral of these scenarios don't think you should shove everytime you have a hand but i know every1 has gotten a sucked out after making say a potsize raise preflop say with poket kings and being called by some idiot with say 3-7 he makes a hand, you lose call him every name in the book but still kick yourself for not shoving preflop?

Online poker is rigged no strategy get up early and play dominatnently

it happens i deal live poker 5 nights a week and suckouts are a big part of the game ... online is a scripted playout to create pots

maybe going all in will work for some, carbon has a all in tourney for 3 bucks, you should try it to see if it works for you

Going all-in is fun every once in awhile, but I prefer to try to outplay my opponents.
