This is how I work out my odds while playing poker (number of outs multiplyed by 2)
I realize this only a rough guide and im sure alot of people started out this way but i would now like to learn to calculate the odds more accurately without using an odds calculator.can anyone give advice on where to go or what books or articles dicuss this in an easy to understand way?or does anyone know any way kind of formula for working this out?
Getting to know your opponents (which is impossible in large site freerolls) is crucial to success. What are the tendencies of your opponents? Are you playing forum games or random site sng's? Cash tables are a whole different beast. What is your goal?
You just have to count how many cards can improve your odds. But there are false odds too, be careful. If you have TJ, flop 988, other guy has QQ, if you aount Q as a good card for you it's a false odd.
use math and picture what your opponents have got, then try work out the best way of attack
when i play you have to use math and probabilty...but the donks dont...and they can donk out on you...like i got dealt 3's....i flop a set...i raise guy re-raises..i go all in...he calls with middle pair...and we split pot cause rivered a straight on the board...
You hit the flop well and hold a strong hand.You should bet....dont let anyone catch up...trapping can lead to trapping yourself...ppl fish and catch alot online...dont give them that opportunity:(
Your hand totally misses the board....You have nothing, so you should check and fold. Another possibility is to bluff....but if bluffing know when to fold....
The third possibility is that you currently do not hold a strong hand, but it is possible for you to make a strong hand if the turn or river brings you a good card. This situation is known as "drawing."........In this situation, a spade will make you a flush, and an Ace or King will bring you top pair........
Chip sizes is more important than card's odds. Sometimes you just dont have a chance to see next card.
First of all, outs calculation should only be used when the situation you're in is likely to occur multiple times (e.g. in a cash game where the blinds stay the same). This is because when they do happen again and you make the right choices, you profit overall. But in a tournament, where the blinds change, its more about waiting for a better spot and survival. If the odds are right too call (e.g. 1000 into a 5000 pot on a flush draw after the flop), but your stack is 2500 and you're likely to have to stick it all in after the turn, its better to fold. This is because you can always wait for a better spot to stick your chips in. In a cash game, your stack doesn't matter because you can rebuy as many times as you want and if you get into the same situation again, you'll hit the flush about once in 3 times.
Don't you just hate this sort of thing. I cannot count the number of times I have lost a pot in a freeroll because the guy held 2 hearts or something with 2 up and made the river ...grrrrrrrrr

basic rules for working out your odds are
after the flop add up your outs and times by 4
so if you have 2 suited cards in your hand and 2 on the flop giving you a flush draw then you have 9 outs times by 4 = 36%
on the turn if you are still drawing times it by 2 so now its 18% to hit
give or take
This would work great if all people played according to some books rules. What about the guy who sits with 2 clubs and 2 on the table..waiting...or the idiot that goes all in on 4-9 hearts. Only when playing with experienced players in a very serious game would this work.Quote:

"poker odds" is a fun phrase! Which odds? Pot odds, implied odds, the odds of you holding the best hand now (say on the flop) or the odds of you winning the pot.All these odds are different and affect how you play a hand.
a guy chasing the river will do just that , especially if the buy in is low. so be careful. but it's good to let them pay, but be prepared to lose to fishes
It's important to make a read on the cards of your enemy... you can calculate your outs by x2+2...for turn... and x4-4 for river
I have a hard time with odds too. I really have started to try and play each situation. What position am I in and what is the right move based on how the other players are betting, etc. Every hand is different and each hand can get cracked which is why we all keep playing!
Maybe my problem is not that i dont understand about the game, maybe iam just an unlucky player. Living my life most of times afraid to make big decisions, maybe afects in my game'
Pot odds are as easy as computing outs. You just compare your outs or your chance of winning to the size of the pot. If your chance of winning is significantly better than the ratio of the pot size to a bet, then you have good pot odds. If it's lower, then you have bad pot odds

if you want to convert your outs to percentages, for eg. youve got 9,10 unsuited and 7,8,A rainbow flop comes you've got an open ended straightdraw, the four Jacks and four 6's will complete your hand. it would be fair to say someone has the ace for this e.g so hitting a 9 or 10 wont be added as outs so in total you have 8 outs to this open ended straight. to complete it by the turn you multiply by 4.
so you have 4 * 8 = 32% of getting there if its a miss you multiply your outs by 2 by giving us by the river only 16% chance of connecting the board for us.
if you want your pot odds, its the total pot over to what you need to call to stay in the pot... e.g the pot contains 1200 in chips and the play before you raises 400 making a total of 1600. you are being asked to call 400 for 1600 chips. to turn it to odd its 1600/400
thus giving us 4/1 pot odds not a bad call at all id say..... depends on your outs as well.
using the previous e.g having 32% on the turn its a good call as the pot odds get involved. to work out what percentage you need to being whats being asked to call youve got 4 to 1. add these together you get 5 divide 100 by 5 you get 20%. the pot says you need a minimum 20% to continue but you have 32% making this a correct call.
if this e.g was on the river youre now on got 16% but the pot is saying you need 20% making it incorrect to call, but you can negate this with your implied odds usally as its quite a marginal call. over time it becomes quite natural thinking.
