Legal Poker in Washington DC, Jersey and Hawaii?

In a 2010 budget council approved online poker to the residents of Washington DC, yes you read that correct. The same place where the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was created to stop online poker could offer poker to the district.

According to Councilman Michael Brown, it is legal in the district and officials said the window for Congress expired on Thursday. DC estimates online gambling could bring in around $13 million over three years, beginning in 2012.


New Jersey's governor had vetoed a similar proposal.

Last week Hawaii said no to online and live poker on the islands.

"Legalized gambling would introduce an undesirable element to our islands, and would have a highly detrimental effect on the tourist industry," Dianne Kay, president for the Hawaii Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, said Monday.

They should just legalize gambling everywhere. Im talking about online poker to sports betting ...the whole 9 yards. All gambling is is a money making machine!!

Didn't I hear before they should block Poker there?

I guess great news then.

As difficult as it is to read the budget the US is trying to hammer out, trying to reduce debt but still increase spending to the Pentagon and take away money to feed people, educate and health care....confuses me in not understanding why the government and all states would not want this injection of money? Its taxable money at that.

Online Poker players are actually reducing their carbon footprint compared to those that drive to the bright light casino. With the rising price of gas, people are staying home and maybe, just maybe the risk a bit more now in the sense of gambling because the government bails out Wall St and squeezes every red penny from Main St.

Hopefully the people of Washington DC get the ball rolling for the rest of the country.

this is why this country is so fucked up, we so many ass backwards government officials and rules, not to mention high level people who get to bend or outright break the rules if they want to. While the rest of us have to suffer and be controlled by our fascist govmnt.

Washington D.C. is the first US State to pass a law allowing people to wager on online poker.

This law was passed on the 7th of April 2011 without any objection from Congress (mostly because they were to busy trying to pass their own budget). The bill, titled the Lottery Modernization Act of 2010 has made Columbia in Washington D.C the first US district and State to incorporate an online gaming law that allows internet gambling.

yea its a sad day wen we're told how to spend our own money...they just wana be sure that they're taking the maximum cut out of whatever money is being transferred between all the players on the sites....im thinking that if theres ever a US ONLY players site, they'll definitely allow it, since they'll be able to take a cut of every player's money..as it is, they have no right to touch anyone's money on the sites that arent in the US, so they outright banned any us players from playing on them...

I am a horse racing fan and like going to the track. Horse racing is in trouble in IL. The purses are going down and taxes are going up. The city of Chicago will not allow the tracks to put in slot machines to help subsidize income. If this doesnt happen illinois will not have horse racing after the next 2 yrs. This would be a hell of a lot easier to regulate than online poker. So for my state it does not look good.

I think Kentucky is in worse shape. Chicago will take care of their own eventually. I liked Maryland racing in the 80s but I wont drive the hour plus anymore.

Yeah dont think Las Vegas isnt hammering the blue prints behind closed doors but as dumbg and slow as our gov is it will take a couple years to get online back

ONLINE will be back but i doubt companys like pokerstars and tilt will be welcome in the United states. Its gonna be run by casinos i bet.

right on brother, u r on the simple truth, well iguess its ok to have internet porn, gthey both extract money, in porn the winners r the 1s gettin the money, this country is being controlled by the minority on this gambling issue. i can go to nevada and pay for travel ,etc. and spend a lot more than stayin at home. its ludicrous, and im sure some1 is behind this.

i think u r half right , the casinos first, but ft n ps will be back after they have a market and it will be great, the competion for customers will be grest and it will be freeroll city.

Of course poker will be legalized in D.C. where all the politicians that run our country are located. They have better healthcare plans, better pension plans, and now access to legal online poker before the rest of the country. Isn't that how an elitist country is run?
