Obviously there are some drugs that can give an edge to a pro poker player. Stimulants for longevity, amphetamines for focus, anesthetics for covering tells. Should there be a enforced standard for those competing in the top poker events?

in any event, that is organised competition where there is cash to be won, anything that gives the player an unfair illegal advantage should have something done about it, the problem is that ud have to limit the drug testing to the large events only
Poker's more of a table game as opposed to a sport. I've never thought of it as a sport.
Imagine someone taking down a poker tournament at a casino and the casino telling the player that he tested positive for marijuana after winning, so his winnings are null. It's pretty silly. Even with large events like the WSOP players can drink while playing if they choose. It's not a game that needs drug testing at the slightest, and I'm sure plenty of sober players would prefer their competition to be less than clear minded anyway.
It's apples and oranges. Steroids in cycling and Baseball? That's bad, and gives players an unfair advantage without a doubt. Amphetamines during a poker game? I'd rather be sober, lol.
I'd rather be sober!
No, You pay to get in...
Where do you draw the line I suppose? Does the guy who has ADD get to take his prescription adderall the day of the tournament, while the guy taking amphetamines without a script gets drug tested? Does the guy who did cocaine a week ago get his winnings and titles nulled because he came up positive? Is there a strict no drinking policy before the tournament?
It just sounds rather silly to me. If I was an Olympic runner and someone who beat me had been doping, I'd be pissed and call him out on it, try to get him stripped of his title. BUT, If I'm in a big stakes poker tournament and someone took some mood stabilizers and some stimulants and beat me, I would have to just deal with it and try to tighten my game up a bit. I wouldn't be too hard pressed to say he had an unfair advantage beyond anything reasonable.
poker isnt a sport
poker is a skill, one in which drug testing isnt needed
Nope, NBA players dont get drug tested for THC(no offence not like thats confirming or denying a sterotype) but no. Think Stu Ungar
poker is the drug. Do bowlers get tested?
thats true. my gf's always like how can u sit there and play all night for hours on end (live most the time) and yeah, it is the drug. Keeps me going, the thrill of donking someone
Unless there are rules in place to say u cant do it its fine. As far as putting those rules in place I dont think it is that big of an edge, all those "drugs" have many adverse effects that go along with desired effects. IMO it's a dumb idea
good question i think it should but that would be alot of testing lol each day too
Well if they did drug test it would have to be random. But these are poker players so they would calculate there odds of getting pulled aside and make a educated decision anyway. Either way I think with any drugs advantages would come disadvantages. And the advantages would be slight and little more than you could get from legal drugs weather prescribed, over-the-counter, legal herbal supplements , or alchohol. I don't think it is worth the money or debate. For that matter I think the list of drugs checked for in most traditional sports should be severely shortened. I don't care if a player smokes pot. Truth be told, I don't care if that smoke crack.
Poker is 100% not a sport. As far as drug testing in poker....I'd say it's not worth it as well. Lol you'll never hear the headline. "Phil Helmuth stripped of his poker bracelets for testing positive for HGH(human growth hormone)".
And yes I know they would use different drugs than HGH to enhance the mind, I was just being cheesy)
I think Doc Hollidaze said it right, "Stu Ungar". He was doped out of his gore and he was still a great player. I think drug testing would be uncalled for, especially when most of poker is played in Vegas. I am sure most players are getting messed up after or during tourneys and ring games win or lose.
lol...drugs dont give a advantage at the tables.
Poker is all mental, maybe adderall helps by making youconcentrate but thats about it.
60% of pokerplayers dodrugs epsically smoke weed.
Just in case we might have a player that goes limitless like Bradley cooper. Lol sure why not
If they drug tested your favortie pro most likely wouldtn have a job lol
Um no because its not a sport that has anything to do with athletic ability. Your not affiliated with anybody or working for anyone. What you do is your business and no one else. Ah its sure nice to be living in Colorado!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lots of good replies! poker is not a sport! also agree u pay to play so no drug test needed! and those drugs mentioned above wear off and they will crash!! as will they!!
i dont think there should be drug testing in poker not like doing drugs gives you a supreme advantage it gives you no advantage in my opinon so i dont think there should be drug testing in poker
Sorry guys, i wont be able to play poker with you guys this week. the board of poker has suspended me for doping.
If there will be tests like that i quit playing
in any event, that is organised competition where there is cash to be won, anything that gives the player an unfair illegal advantage
Until "Limitless" becomes "Base on a True Story", I think we're good.
This is a funny thread. I hope they don't test any of our forum as the norm is probably 80% failure.
welp in the Casino's they offer you all the alcohol you can drink in hopes that you lose all your money to them. So my question would be is alcohol a drug????
I bet ya alot of pros take riddilin. I've taken a few times back in the day at school when needed to study for test and i kicked ass studying and with the end of the year test. so i bet ya quite a few do
There's no unified poker league that would be able to enforce this rule. But if the organizers of a specific tournament decided that they wanted to drug test their players, well then I guess that's their right.
