Giving the users power

I want to somehow find a way to give the users back the power to declare a post in the forum as spam..but how?

If I give you a button to declare a post spammy, and then the post gets XX # of hits, its deleted and the user is subtracted 5 points...

But I worry about allowing that for to many people.


So what if I give users that are over XX months old that ability? Still issues?

Or if I designate certain users with that power (We saw before, 1 user might be not enough, so if 2-3 of these users with that power had the ability... and more than 1 thought it was spam, then the deletion \ minus points would happen)

You would need to add a dropdown that says why they are declaring it spam - i could easily see people creating a thread and doing that to any post they dont like.

Id worry about a group of people (or MAs) colluding to mark valid posts due to a personal issue with the poster. Setting about 5-10 peeps with the power should be good (or length of time here + post count used to choose), it should probably go to a mod review thread so it can be verified spam or not, and power revoked if abused. Good idea to have that available tho

I would support this power for mods assuming it would be regulated to prevent any impropriety.

i dont like the idea only because to many ppl hate eachother on here and it would only cause more problems..... unless u could some how see who considered each comment/post "spam". my 2 cents.

Maybe set it up so that it's for anyone with over a year and not under any type of ban, and then it takes 5 votes to get removed. But don't post how many votes a comment has already gotten cause then it will just start a domino effect of voting out a thread. Or only give the mods the power and it takes 2 mod votes to delete a thread/comment.

Yea, it is probably not completely carrying the load but I would have to imagine it is still better than the possible future drama stemming from this! You could possibly be adding to your own workload Z!

I personally think give the power to all over 1 month users. Make it five "flags" and set up a way to dispute a claim if you're flagged.

i think it should be more then just how long you've been here..ive been here long but inactive for a few months...maybe somehow have it to do with someone activity?

Not a bad idea, maybe make it available to those that have over 500 posts so that will prove they are active members.

Making this tool available to users who have been here a year or over wouldn't work very well either I don't think, we have newer members here who are under that year mark but are very active, I don't think activity should be purely based on forum posts, I do a lot of other things.

I do agree with your earlier comment about having not having it visible to users if the thread has received spam votes, because it will cause a domino effect.

I think 500 posts is a bit much. But then again, I don't have 500 posts.

I really think the best idea is to just let the mods have the power, although I would honestly prefer if 2 mods had to vote to delete a thread instead of just one.

i agree with everything that rghy2 just said. she was spot on in her comment above

there ARE funny one lined posts that are on topic but most of them(nervous) are spam (real nervous)

Chose a group of 5 long term and active members to do this.

I honestly in my opinion dont think this would be very useful, alot of members here are just going to try to flag and decalare spam the messgages that they dont like or cant handle, even tho if it is useful or honest

I think this is a good idea - especially not presenting the vote tally. Would it be possible for a post to be move to "new posts" when it receives a vote? What I'm thinking here is that spam posts will slip by when few users are on; those spammers who do that will still get their points.

Heres a possibility (not saying I want this and I'm sure I'm getting threatening calls later), what about setting up a 48 hour time delay on points for posting? Easy to implement (if you needed idea how to let me know) but here's some benefits

A. reduce spam bot types: If a program is set to auto post, it may have issues determining success without points added, so may stop or reduce that activity

B. Less need for reporting upgrade due to mods having enough time to clear out posts before you get free points

C If used with the reporting upgrade instead, allows time for moderators to go thru moderated posts before points added, both B and C should reduce human spamming as they know it'll get caught (and addressed) before they can even get points.

D With a reduced count of spam (and warnings applied to members who still try) you could possibly expand the free point system for quality posts, perhaps 10 points for thread starting and a higher cap then 20 per day (this is assuming the cap was in part due to forum spamming)

This is only a possible suggestion and i'm sure there are other benefits (and possible issues) that could be taken from this, take it as you will

nothing u do minus getting rid of the points for posting altogether will rid of spam, having users do the mods work for them wont help either as others have said too cliquey in this place

just make a rep system +1 for good posts -1 for bad ones make it visible for all to see that way if someone consistantly gets -1's mods can take a futher look into why they are getting such feedback

it will make it easier to spot, malicious posters/spam bots and general retarded fuckery

as well as pointing out who the good/useful posters are enabling n00bs to find who to ask/talk to on an issue

Agree about the rep system on the positive side, revenge downgrading posts or just peeps hating on an opinion or something make n neg point giving a bad idea. Could split the difference though, 10 point cap to cut chit posts + points thru positive repping (with cap to avoid abuse) might work to get more people putting less spam and actually read the posts

This is probably 4th on my list of major upgrades

that would b a cool idea on the post. Maybe for the members that have been here a certain mount of time, could get a bump for real legit post. you'll always gonna have those that spam though so it is a tough call.

well no because the neg rating wouldnt actually do anything other than give the mods a heads up and just as with the infractions can be reversed if they have been given unduly u cant have one without the other

I'm sure that some people think of spam posts differently than other users, although it would be pretty cool for users to declare a post as spam. In my opinion it would work best with just a handful of the top pokerowned players being able to declare a post a spam.

I like the idea because I think the upgrade would get rid of the trolls. Give members the option similar to Facebook to report spam. It would only give the forum some depth and much needed content. There are too many that is just clogging up the threads with something off topic or a post that does not even make sense. Nice to see this upgrade is on the PO to do list.
